Tang Jiaxuan Holds Talks with Bahr Ul-Uloum, President of Iraqi Governing Council

On March 26, 2004, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan held friendly talks with Bahr Ul-Uloum, President of Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) at the Great Hall of the People.

Tang Jiaxuan said both China and Iraq boast time-honored history and glorious civilizations, and the long-standing friendly relations between the two peoples have been continuously enriched as time goes by. Against the backdrop of changed situations, China will make efforts to cement and develop friendly relations with Iraq in the principles of treating each other as equals and friends politically and conducting reciprocal cooperation so as to achieve common development economically. China is ready to take an active part in the reconstruction of Iraq.

Ul-Uloum said the peoples of Iraq and China have enjoyed long-standing friendly relations, and Iraq admired very much the time-honored history and culture of China and its achievements in economic development. Iraq attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with China and stands ready to promote and expand the exchanges and cooperation between the countries in various areas.

Tang Jiaxuan expounded China's principled stance on the solution of the Iraqi issue, saying China is confident that the Iraqi people have the wisdom and the capability to overcome the temporary difficulties on the way ahead and build a new Iraq with the help of the international community.

Ul-Uloum briefed the Chinese side on the reconstruction plan of Iraq, highly complimented the position of the Chinese government on the Iraqi issue, and thanked China for its humanitarian assistance to Iraq, expressing hopes to learn from the experience of China in the reconstruction process and welcoming businesses of China taking an active part in the reconstruction of Iraq.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Finance attended the talks.
